FAO MountainsMatter Photo Contest

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has launched a #MountainsMatter Photo Contest in celebration of International Mountain Day that is observed every year on 11 December 2018. Participants from around the world are encouraged to submit photos showing why mountains matter to them. Approximately 13 percent of the world’s population lives in mountains. By submitting your photos, you can help bring awareness to the importance of mountains and mountain peoples. The winner of the contest will win a certificate and a copy of the FAO publication, Towards Zero Hunger 1945-2030.

“#MountainsMatter” is the theme chosen for this year’s celebration of International Mountain Day. Although mountains are mentioned in the 2030 Agenda, they are often forgotten and do not receive adequate political attention and investments. Mountains play a crucial role in providing key ecosystem goods and services to the planet. Special attention needs to be given to mountains and their vulnerability in the face of climate change.

The #MountainMatter Photo Contest provides an occasion to create a large social movement that can bring mountain issues on the tables of politicians. Through a global campaign, a social media strategy and events around the world, we plan to tell the worldthat the current neglect of mountains and mountain peoples must stop.

To enter the contest, participants must be 18 years or older and submit their photo through the online submission form (minimum width 1754 pixels at 150 ppi, maximum file size 5 MB), along with a description of the photo explaining why mountains matter to them.

Participants can potentially send photos of the following:

• A portrait of a person living in the mountains, anywhere in the world;

• Mountain communities in action (practicing traditional cultural activities, local farming techniques, weaving and handcrafts, livestock rearing, etc.);

• A mountain festival, ritual or celebration;

• A sacred or legendary mountain; and/or

• A temple, a church or a place of worship on a mountain.

A jury will choose the six best photos, and the six finalists will be posted on FAO’s Facebook page for the public to decide the winner in time for International Mountain Day on 11 December 2018.Additionally, don’t forget to post your photo if you have a Twitter, Flickr or Instagram account, using the International Mountain Day hashtag: #MountainsMatter. We’ll retweet some of your photos on @FAOForestry Twitter.

The deadline to enter is 15 November 2018.
