“Mountain wilderness” refers to any pristine, untouched mountain environment, where anyone can experience vast open spaces, silence, solitude, nature. “The value of wilderness therefore lies above all in its potential to stimulate a creative relationship between civilised man and the natural environment. It is the degree of authenticity of this relationship that gives a non-ephemeral meaning to adventure.”

This definition dates back to 1987, when the Biella theses, our manifesto, were written. They marked the birth of Mountain Wilderness.

Mountain Wilderness International (MWI) is the umbrella organisation of the national chapters of Mountain Wilderness. It facilitates communication and exchange among national chapters, coordinates and organises international projects and actions and officially represents the organisation in its relations with governments, authorities, international institutions and non-governmental organisations.

If you share our ideas and you wish to help us, please join a national chapter. Mountain Wilderness has chapters in a dozen countries.

Hands off our glaciers!On Saturday, 13 April 2024, the NGO Mountain Wilderness Deutschland sent a clear signal in the Kaunertal against the threat of the Weißseespitze and Gepatschferner (Ötztal Alps) being developed with new lifts and pistes.After eight activists had unfurled a large banner with the slogan "Hands off the glaciers!" on the 3510 metre high summit, a second action took place in the Kaunertal Glacier ski area below the Weißseespitze. There, activists unfurled their banner again, disseminated information and spoke to many skiers to spread awareness on the issue. The reactions were very positive. Almost all of the winter sports enthusiasts addressed rejected the planned development measures and stated they were satisfied with the existing offer.Therefore to say that tourism has to meet an increasing demand does not correspond to reality. Business and politics should respect the wishes of tourists and refrain from the measures they are planning to implement!Especially in times of climate change, the magnificent ice landscape of the Gepatschferner is a heritage that should not be lightheartedly sacrificed for short-term economic interests. ... With an investment volume of 130 million euros, three new cable cars and 60 hectares of additional pistes were planned.Yet the majority of the 1500 inhabitants voted against the #Pitztal-#Ötztal project. Just six months later, however, new expansion plans were presented.Now the operators want to build further lifts in cooperation with the #Kaunertal ski area.Here is the petition (available in several languages):"The two largest glaciers in the Tyrolean Alps are threatened by further development with ski lifts and pistes.
