Patrick WAGNON

Born in France in 1969, Patrick is a glaciologist at the Grenoble Institute of Environmental Geosciences (IRD, Grenoble Alpes University, CNRS, INP‑G) and a member of a research team dedicated to the study of mountain glaciers. After an early career focused on Andean glaciers, he turned his attention in 2022 to monitoring Himalayan glaciers, first in India and later in Nepal.

Together with his colleagues, he established a glacier observation network across several Himalayan sites to measure annual and seasonal changes in ice volume and to relate these variations to local meteorological conditions. Using remote sensing, the team extrapolates these field measurements to the scale of the entire Himalayan range. Their aim is to understand how climate change is affecting these glaciers and, in turn, the region’s vital water resources.
