Want to see mountain nature better protected? Join us!

“Mountain wilderness” refers to any pristine, untouched mountain environment, where anyone can experience vast open spaces, silence, solitude, nature. “The value of wilderness therefore lies above all in its potential to stimulate a creative relationship between civilised man and the natural environment. It is the degree of authenticity of this relationship that gives a non-ephemeral meaning to adventure.”

This definition dates back to 1987, when the Biella theses, our manifesto, were written. They marked the birth of Mountain Wilderness.

Mountain Wilderness International (MWI) is the umbrella organisation of the national chapters of Mountain Wilderness. It facilitates communication and exchange among national chapters, coordinates and organises international projects and actions and officially represents the organisation in its relations with governments, authorities, international institutions and non-governmental organisations.

If you share our ideas and you wish to help us, please join a national chapter. Mountain Wilderness has chapters in a dozen countries.

Mountain Wilderness International
Mountaineering legend Richard Goedeke, who co-founded the international NGO Mountain Wilderness, will be stepping down as an international guarantor this year and has recruited top climber #AlexanderHuber as his successor. "Mountain Wilderness (MW) was founded in 1987. Twenty guarantors from different countries were elected. Their task was (and is) to promote the idea of MW as an organisation for the protection and preservation of wilderness and cultures of mountain peoples in their countries. At the same time, the guarantors were to ensure that the idea was not watered down and commercialised.I have performed this task for over 39 years and would now like to pass it on to younger hands. I am delighted that Alexander Huber is available for this role. He knows and appreciates mountain wilderness from his own experience, has already actively participated in MW campaigns and will also represent us credibly on an international level.I am grateful for the support I have received in our joint efforts. I hope that the idea of protecting the mountains from further development and preserving their originality will convince even more people and spread further", said Richard."We humans come from nature. That's why it's so important that we keep going out into nature. And that's exactly why we have to protect this nature, the basis of our existence. I am very happy to become part of the Mountain Wilderness community", replied Alexander. MW International Governing Board warmly welcomes Alexander and is very pleased that he has agreed to succeed Richard in the role of international guarantor. "2026 Winter Olympics: Artificial snow takes a toll on the environment - The Milan Cortina Olympic Games are no exception: Artificial snowmaking will be used almost everywhere. This technology, which requires large amounts of water and energy, has led to major infrastructure changes that have been criticized by environmental advocates and scientists."#LeMonde ...
