“Mountain wilderness” refers to any pristine, untouched mountain environment, where anyone can experience vast open spaces, silence, solitude, nature. “The value of wilderness therefore lies above all in its potential to stimulate a creative relationship between civilised man and the natural environment. It is the degree of authenticity of this relationship that gives a non-ephemeral meaning to adventure.”

This definition dates back to 1987, when the Biella theses, our manifesto, were written. They marked the birth of Mountain Wilderness.

Mountain Wilderness International (MWI) is the umbrella organisation of the national chapters of Mountain Wilderness. It facilitates communication and exchange among national chapters, coordinates and organises international projects and actions and officially represents the organisation in its relations with governments, authorities, international institutions and non-governmental organisations.

If you share our ideas and you wish to help us, please join a national chapter. Mountain Wilderness has chapters in a dozen countries.

The tragedy that struck dozens of hikers and mount The tragedy that struck dozens of hikers and mountaineers has shaken us all deeply. We mourn the dead and express our sympathy to their families and the injured.

It is, however, a tragedy that must make us reflect. The disaster struck one day after a record high temperature of 10 degrees Celsius was recorded at the glacier’s summit.

Italy currently has about 920 glaciers, almost entirely in the Alps. In the last 20 years, the country has lost 25 percent of the water from those shrinking glaciers, and melting glaciers and permafrost weakens the mountains, causing glacier collapse, rockfalls, landslides, mudflows, debris and slushflows.

Today is World Environment Day! 2022 is a histori Today is World Environment Day!

2022 is a historic milestone: it marks 50 years since the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, where the idea of World Environment Day was formalised, with the first one being celebrated in 1973.
This year’s theme is #OnlyOneEarth.

Did you know that we are using the equivalent of 1.6 Earths to maintain our current way of life?
Ecosystems cannot keep up with our demands.

Our lifestyles are associated with two thirds of all greenhouse gas emissions.

Studies show that sustainable lifestyles and behaviours could reduce our emissions by 40 to 70% by 2050.

There are a lot of actions that we as individuals can put in place to make a difference. What are you doing to make this a better place?

The latest report from the IPCC was released on Fe The latest report from the IPCC was released on February 28.

270 authors from 67 countries assessed the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and human communities in the report, providing detailed observations of historical and recent changes as well as projections of future changes under different levels of GHGs and warming.

The report shows the important difference between lower and higher rates of GHGs scenarios: many low elevation and small glaciers around the world will lose more than half their mass even at 1.5°C warming, while higher levels would cause a loss between two-thirds and over 90%.

A “joyful rendez-vous on pure snow and ice”, w A “joyful rendez-vous on pure snow and ice”, was the promotional slogan of Beijing’s bid to host this year’s Winter Olympics and the slopes were filled with huge quantities of artificial snow, giving them the appearance of white ribbons on a brown backdrop.
China estimated the Winter Olympics will need about 49 million gallons of water (185 million litres) to make its snow; experts think the Games will need 10 times that amount.

Snowmaking for the 2022 Olympic Games has reportedly resulted in water being diverted away from local residents and farmers, who are already short of this resource as Beijing suffers from an endemic water shortage.

If the Olympic venues of Beijing 2022 are converted into permanent ski resorts as planned, these unsustainable practices will likely continue long after the games. And we should not forget that the area falls within the core area of the 4,600-hectare Songshan National Nature Reserve.

But sacrificing biodiversity to ski runs “is standard form for the Winter Olympics. Vancouver 2010 built over sacred indigenous lands. More than 80% of the mountain venues for Sochi 2014 fell inside Russia’s protected Sochi Natural Park and Sochi State Natural Reserve, until their boundaries were entirely redrawn to accommodate ski jumps and hotels. Pyeongchang 2018 required the cutting down of thousands of ancient trees on Mount Gariwang, itself a sacred site in South Korea."

The next Winter Olympics are just around the corne The next Winter Olympics are just around the corner, and as usual we question the alleged sustainability of such mega sporting events, but this time we do so on the basis of scientific data.

Researchers at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, recently reviewed the social, environmental and economic sustainability of 16 editions of the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.

The study concludes that the rhetoric of sustainability does not match actual sustainability outcomes and sustainability in the Olympics is clearly declining over time as Salt Lake City (2002) and Albertville (1992) scored higher than all the rest, whereas the Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014 and the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 had the lowest sustainability scores.

How will Beijing 2022 and Milano-Cortina 2026 score?

2021 was the sixth hottest year on record. From 19 2021 was the sixth hottest year on record. From 1960 to 2017, the Alpine snow season shortened by 38 days.

Little or no snow will become a regular winter occurrence. If GHG emissions are not reduced, decrease in snowpack will have significant consequences on ecosystems, agriculture and communities.

The effect of climate change has been stronger on winter temperatures, making snow increasingly rare at ski resorts below 1,500 m.

Ski resorts all over the world rely on artificial snow either via snowmaking systems or even transported via truck or helicopter.

Is artificial snowmaking the solution?

Dear friends, 2021, just like the previous year, h Dear friends,
2021, just like the previous year, has been a challenging one.

Once again we could not meet in presence, and the virtual world - no matter how immersive - could not and cannot by far replace the real one.

We have had to put many projects on hold, as well as many actions, activities and campaigns, but we are confident that the coming year will offer many opportunities and positive surprises.

Keep following us and supporting us 🙏 and enjoy a wonderful holidays break, at home, in the mountains or wherever you will spend the next days and weeks, observing the health, safety and distancing rules in place to keep yourself and others safe.

Take care and Happy Holidays! 💚 🗻

This year's theme of International Mountain Day, o This year's theme of International Mountain Day, on Dec 11, is Sustainable Mountain Tourism.

"To ensure the sustainability of mountain tourism it is essential to measure its impact, measure resources and waste, define the carrying capacity of destinations, advance digitalisation and invest in sustainable infrastructure and products" (Mountain Partnership)

We support responsible travel and advocate the use of public transport, we encourage sustainable development of local economies by involving local population and promoting local and short chain products.

We are committed to maintaining mountains in as natural a state as possible and fight against commoditization of mountain areas.

Respect mountains. Enjoy them sustainably. Because #mountainsmatter

Mountains act as carbon sinks, they provide food a Mountains act as carbon sinks, they provide food and clean water as well as climate and natural hazard regulation.

But mountain ecosystems are particularly sensitive to the impacts of climate change.

Mean annual temperatures in the Alps and Pyrenees have risen by 2° C since the 1980s, i.e. 0 5°C per decade.

In terms of temperature conditions, 0.5°C represent about 100 m altitude difference, meaning that flora and fauna would need to move 100 m upslope every decade to have the same temperature.

At COP26 countries agreed the Glasgow Climate Pact to keep 1.5°C alive, but even if global warming is limited to 1.5°C, the Hindu Kush Himalaya will warm by around 2.1°C by the end of the century.

Studies suggest that the tropical Andes have suffered a warming trend of 0.15-0.2°C/decade above 4000 m.a.s.l. during the last four decades

This is why IPBES calls for a tansformative change, replacing the term sustainable development, as we need to make much bigger steps. Transformative change is a "fundamental, system-wide reorganisation across technological, economic and social factors, including paradigms, goals and values".

It is not too late to make a difference, but we need to start now, at every level, from individual and local to global.
