“Mountain wilderness” refers to any pristine, untouched mountain environment, where anyone can experience vast open spaces, silence, solitude, nature. “The value of wilderness therefore lies above all in its potential to stimulate a creative relationship between civilised man and the natural environment. It is the degree of authenticity of this relationship that gives a non-ephemeral meaning to adventure.”

This definition dates back to 1987, when the Biella theses, our manifesto, were written. They marked the birth of Mountain Wilderness.

Mountain Wilderness International (MWI) is the umbrella organisation of the national chapters of Mountain Wilderness. It facilitates communication and exchange among national chapters, coordinates and organises international projects and actions and officially represents the organisation in its relations with governments, authorities, international institutions and non-governmental organisations.

If you share our ideas and you wish to help us, please join a national chapter. Mountain Wilderness has chapters in a dozen countries.

The UNESCO World Day for Glaciers conference held in Paris last month demonstrated that global efforts to preserve glaciers are gaining momentum. At the same time, it underscored that the international community is still at the very beginning of a long and complex journey. The newly launched Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences will play a decisive role in bringing together scientific evidence, political action and public engagement – all essential to safeguarding glaciers and securing global water resources for the future.The message was clear: this is a collective task. In a few hours, on the Rettenbach Glacier in Sölden, Tyrol (Austria), the bombastic show "Hannibal" will celebrate the general's crossing of the Alps.Since 2001, the show has taken place 16 times. A spectacle of lights, sounds, snow groomers, jets, dancers, helicopters, motocross bikers, extreme athletes and a huge amount of fireworks (with their heavy-metal-laden fallout), at 3,000 m asl.In recent years, the Rettenbach Glacier has been among the unfortunate frontrunners in the Austrian Alpine Club’s glacier report: in 2022/23, a retreat of 41 metres was recorded, and in 2023/24 it was as much as 127 metres. Argentina’s Lower House is preparing to debate a government-backed bill - approved by the Senate in February - that would modify the country’s 2010 Glacier Protection Law. The original law strictly prohibited mining, hydrocarbons, and industrial activities on glaciers and periglacial zones, and created a national inventory of these protected areas.According to the government, the goal is to protect glaciers, strengthen existing environmental standards, and “eliminate the discretional considerations that, under ideological pretexts, have hindered the country’s economic development.” ...
