“Mountain wilderness” refers to any pristine, untouched mountain environment, where anyone can experience vast open spaces, silence, solitude, nature. “The value of wilderness therefore lies above all in its potential to stimulate a creative relationship between civilised man and the natural environment. It is the degree of authenticity of this relationship that gives a non-ephemeral meaning to adventure.”

This definition dates back to 1987, when the Biella theses, our manifesto, were written. They marked the birth of Mountain Wilderness.

Mountain Wilderness International (MWI) is the umbrella organisation of the national chapters of Mountain Wilderness. It facilitates communication and exchange among national chapters, coordinates and organises international projects and actions and officially represents the organisation in its relations with governments, authorities, international institutions and non-governmental organisations.

If you share our ideas and you wish to help us, please join a national chapter. Mountain Wilderness has chapters in a dozen countries.

Is skiing an ecological aberration? This was the question posed by Le Figaro TV to Mountain Wilderness France's president Fiona Mille last Sunday in their programme “Terre des Hommes”.Skiing itself is not the problem—sliding on snow is undeniably enjoyable! The real issue lies in the ski industry's developments (upgrades, new infrastructure, artificial snow, etc.) amidst the pressing impacts of climate change. We need to diversify our activities and establish new economic models that respect the natural balance and planetary boundaries.By 2030, let's channel all our energy and financial resources into preserving our mountains year-round, rather than solely focusing on winter sports like the #WinterOlympics. High-altitude resorts will remain appealing, but the true challenge is to support all mountains in facing the challenges of our century.Le ski est-il une aberration écologique ? ⛷C'est cette question que Le Figaro TV m'a posé dimanche dernier dans leur émission "Terre des Hommes" aux côtés de Pierre Viard, ingénieur du cabinet Utopies.L'occasion de rappeler que non, le problème ce n'est pas le ski. Glisser sur de la neige on est toutes et tous d'accord que c'est vraiment génial !Le problème c'est ce que nous sommes en train de faire de l'économie du ski (montée en gamme, nouvelles infrastructures, enneigement artificiel ...) dans une situation où les effets du dérèglement climatique nous poussent à diversifier notre activité, à trouver de nouveaux modèles économiques dans le respect des équilibres naturels et des limites planétaires.Pour 2030, mettons-toute notre énergie et nos moyens financiers pour faire vivre nos montagnes à l'année, et continuer à nous émerveiller, plutôt que de faire rêver autour des sports d'hiver avec les #JO2030.
